King & Pawn v/s King endgame

Basic Rules:

  • If the king is behind the pawn or adjacent to the pawn, then position is always a draw.
  • The rook pawn is generally a draw.
  • The pawn on the 5th rank & the King in front of the pawn is always winning.

Here,

  • Red represents the QUEENING SQUARE, Where the pawn turns into a queen
  • Blue represents the KEY SQUARES
  • Gold represents the GOLDEN CIRCLES


Stages of King and pawn endgame


STAGE – I: Bring the king to Golden Square


STAGE – II: Bring the pawn to the 5th rank


Criteria:

The king should be in the 6th rank & the pawn should be in the 5th rank

If the above conditions are met in the game. Then we have 2 options,

  1. If we can take control of key square, then we must go for it.
  2. If we are unable to take control of key square, then we can simply push the pawn.


If we can take control of key square, then we must go for it.

If we are unable to take control of key square, then we can simply push the pawn.
